The establishment of a dedicated taskforce to tackle Galway’s traffic problems is welcome and must have as its priorities bus and commuter transport development.
This is the view of Galway West Fianna Fáil TD and chairman of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, Frank Fahey. He has welcomed the commitment from Fine Gael councillor Brian Walsh to establish a dedicated taskforce to tackle traffic congestion in the city.
“I proposed the establishment of such a taskforce in February and I am delighted that it now has the backing of the new city council,” said Dep Fahey.
Dep Fahey believes the proposed taskforce should include the city and county managers, representatives from Bus Éireann and private bus operators, regional traffic garda superintendent, and representatives from the Galway City Transport Office, the Galway Chamber of Commerce, the American Chamber of Commerce, the Galway City Business Association, and key employers in the city.
“Cllr Walsh’s proposal to open up the process to submissions from members of the public is very constructive,” said Dep Fahey, “and I want to offer the process my full support.”
