CO2Renu – the Craghoppers fleece part made from carbon emissions

Leading global adventure travel brand Craghoppers has begun another chapter in its longstanding sustainable story with CO2Renu, joining the range for AW23 as an innovative way of recycling waste CO2 into a product.

CO2Renu reshapes carbon waste by using CO2 emissions as the starting point to create some of Craghoppers' recycled polyester blends. The four-piece collection features a full and half zip fleece for men and women in a variety of colour combinations including blue and navy, black and pepper, and red and ecru.

Katie Cotterill, senior buyer manager on Craghoppers’ product team, said: “We are really excited to be working in collaboration with industry experts to incorporate innovative fabrics on our sustainable sourcing journey.

“As a technical outdoor brand, polyester is one of our most commonly used fibres," she added. "To be able to incorporate LanzaTech's groundbreaking technology into our fabrics mean that we are able to take the first step on our journey to using next generation recycled fibres that don’t rely on recycled bottles.”

The science behind making a CO2Renu fleece is quite complex but it can be explained in three simple steps:

1. CO2 waste is captured from manufacturing factories such as steel mills.

2. The captured CO2 is then fermented (in a process much like making beer ) into liquid ethanol.

3. The liquid ethanol is then polymerised into fibres, which becomes some of the polyester fibres that will be a part of your new CO2Renu fleece.
