Applying for a driving licence or learner permit is a fairly straightforward process.
The NDLS (National Driver Licence Service ) offers an online service which caters for all application types.
You can apply online for:
first-time learner permit or full licence
renewing your driving licence or learner permit
updating personal details
replacement of a lost/stolen or damaged licence or permit
exchanging your foreign licence for an Irish licence
There is no need to book an appointment or attend an NDLS centre, as all of this can be done online at ndls.ie
All you need is your Public Services Card and your verified MyGovID for safe, secure access to your online application.
Rules for novice/learner drivers
For a period of two years after receiving your first driving licence, you are considered a novice driver. There are special conditions that apply to novice drivers during this period:
you must display N-plates on your vehicle for the first two years
you cannot act as a sponsor or accompanying driver for a category B learner driver
a lower blood alcohol concentration threshold applies (20mg )
a lower threshold of seven penalty points leading to disqualification usually applies to novice drivers.
If learner and novice drivers get seven points in three years they are off the road for six months. The reason the threshold is low is because these drivers are inexperienced.
A learner driver must display L-plates to the front and rear of the vehicle at all times while driving. They must also always have someone with a full driving licence in the car while driving.
Learners can also not drive on a motorway or tow a trailer.
