Thousands are expected to flock to the city centre in the coming weeks as the official opening of the Galway Christmas Market tomorrow (Friday ) signals the beginning of the festive period in Galway. The market will have an extended run this year, bringing cheer to the city centre right up to January 7.
With artisanal foods, handmade gifts, a bierkeller, and lots of festive cheer the Christmas market has come to symbolise the beginning of the Christmas period in Galway. The market, now in its 13th year, regularly attracts huge crowds to the city centre to enjoy the carnival atmosphere, benefiting both the market traders and the city’s retail and hospitality sectors.
The market will be in full festive swing until Friday, December 22, with the vintage amusements and view wheel continuing to operate up to Christmas Eve.
For the first time, the market will reopen after Christmas, with a scaled back version operating on both Eyre Square North and the plaza in Kennedy Park from St Stephen’s Day, December 26, until Sunday January 7. This will include the ever-popular Christmas Market Bar until December 31.
The decision to extend the market was made after last year’s event, during which Galway City Council sought feedback from local businesses, who reported that the market provided a substantial boost to business in the city during the festive period, with many asking that it continue through the holiday season.
