New car registrations for the month of September were down 10.3 per cent (5,669 ) when compared to September 2022 (6,318 ), according to figures released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI ).
The figures also show that new car sales for the year-to-date are up 16.5 per cent (118,369 ) on the same period last year (101,587 ).
There were a total of 1,493 new electric vehicles registered last month compared to 1,851 in September 2022 (-19.34% ).
So far this year, 21,707 new electric cars have been registered in comparison to 14.510 (+49.6% ) on the same period in 2022.
Imported used cars seen a 0.1 per cent (4,328 ) decrease in September 2023, when compared to September 2022 (4,333 ). Year-to-date imports are up 2.5 per cent (38,339 ) on 2022 (37,417 ).
In September, the car market share grew, with petrol retaining the largest share at 30.39 per cent, diesel accounting for 22.18 per cent, hybrid 18.64 per cent, electric 18.34 per cent, and plug-in electric hybrid 8.21 per cent.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs ), plug-in hybrids and hybrids now see their combined market share (year-to-date ) at 45.19 per cent.

Vantastic year for sales continues
Meanwhile, light commercial vehicle (LCV )/ van sales are up 15.4 per cent (2,021 ) compared to September last year (1,751 ).
For the year-to-date, a total of 27,220 new LCVs have been sold in Ireland, a 30.6 per cent rise on the same period in 2022.
Meanwhile, heavy goods vehicle (HGV ) registrations decreased by just over 17 per cent in September (155 ) compared to the same month in 2022.
However, HGV sales for the year-to-date are up 27 per cent, with 2,375 units sold.
