United Women return to action with comfortable win

Galway United Women’s team recorded a second win on the spin with a comfortable 3-0 win away to Treaty United on Saturday.

Incredibly, there were six weeks between the win at home to DLR Waves on September 9 and the win in Limerick.

Internationals, cup weekends and inclement weather all conspired to provide a second de facto break in the season, but the Galway women continue to impress despite the challenges. And there was a welcome return to action for Irish international Julie-Ann Russell who enjoyed 81 minutes under her belt in her first appearance in 364 days.

United did the damage in the first half and settled the tie with two fine finishes from the edge of the box.

The first came after sustained United pressure on the right. Therese Kinnevey showed good control and poise to beat her marker and deliver a dangerous ball into the box. Treaty could only hack it out as far as Kate Thompson, who controlled, opened her right foot and lifted an incredible effort over the keeper Anna-Marie Ulliac to give the visitors the lead in the 20th minute.

Kinnevey was involved in the second also, which came on the stroke of half-time. Her quick throw was held up well by Russell, who found Jenna Slattery in support. Her threatening cross was again only half-cleared and Jodie Griffin did her best impression of Thompson to curl a left-footed effort into the net.

United were comfortable in the second half and could even afford to leave star performer Lynsey McKey on the bench.

A fine team move in injury-time of the second half produced the third. Slattery went short with a disguised pass from a set-piece in the middle of Treaty’s half. Emma Duffy scampered down the wing, bet one defender and turned in a beautiful cross that was powered home by Jamie Erickson to put the gloss on another fine performance.

United now endure another week off before facing champions Peamount United at home on November 4 before finishing their campaign a week later away to Wexford Youths. Three more points will guarantee a hugely creditable fourth-placed finish to round off a brilliant season.
