Lyons wants speeding issue addressed

Galway City West and Knocknacarra Councillor Donal Lyons has been receiving on-going representations from residents and resident associations in relation to ongoing speeding of motor vehicles in the greater Galway City West Electoral area.

Over the last year, he has received numerous representations from residents living on the Ballymoneen Road Upper and Lower, Clybaun Road Lower, Cappagh Road, Kingston Road, Rahoon Road, Taylor’s Hill and Western Distributor Road complaining of excessive speeds on those particular roads.

“There is a genuine concern that speeding is on the increase and needs to be tackled as a matter of urgency,” he said.

“Over the years in order to deter speeding, I allocated funding from my Local Improvement Scheme funding in having Speed Detector Signs installed on the Ballymoneen Road, Barna Road, Clybaun Road, at Gentian Hill and at other City locations.

“The installation of these signs has seen a reduction in speeding; however, officials at Galway City Council have indicated that there is now a saturation of these signs as there are now over 60 in situ and the costs associated with their upkeep and maintenance is under consideration.

“Also, are these detector signs being ignored as some motorists are still not reducing speed when approaching these signs which show them exceeding the speed limits at those locations.

As a result, I am going to continue to raise the issue of speeding both at the Galway City Joint Policing Committee and with officials at Galway City Council. I have also asked the Salthill Gardaí to be more proactive and have more enforcement with more speed checks being carried out in relation to reducing speeding. Speeding is a major road safety issue,” he said.
