Wegians and Corinthians set to meet in CSL

Galwegians enjoyed a facile win over Munster side Bruff in a pre-season challenge on Saturday.

The newly promoted division two outfit had no answer Galwegians’ superiority as they notched six tries without reply. New recruit, cenrre Chris Briegel, formerly with Ballymena, bagged two tries, while outhalf Ross Shaughnessy, winger John Cleary, lock Liam Scahill, and hooker Alex O’Sullivan also crossed the whitewash. Winger Rob O’Beirne converted four to bring up the Galwegian tally to 38 points.

Galwegians resume their Connacht Senior League action this weekend after their clash with Connemara was cancelled last weekend. They will meet city rivals Corinthians on Saturday (3pm ) in Corinthian Park.

The AIB Cup draw, which took place recently, sees Galwegians facing the first-round winners of Highfield v Sunday’s Well in the second round. Galwegians advanced to the semi-final of the competition for the first time last year, but lost to eventual winners Shannon by 5-8.

The knock out cup competition brings together all 48 AIB League clubs from the four provinces, with the first round comprising the 32 clubs from divisions two and three. Corinthians have been drawn to play division two outfit Bective Rangers away, while Connemara will host Barnhall, newly relegated to division three.

Buccaneers have a tough assignment, having been pitted against Clontarf in round two.

The first round games will be played on the weekend September 27/28, with the second round on the weekend November 1/2..
