€50,000 Galway Wind Park Scholarship Fund now open for applications

Third-level students from Connemara are being invited to apply for the next round of education funding being made available under the 2023 Galway Wind Park Scholarship Programme, which is funded by Ireland’s largest wind farm Galway Wind Park. The closing date for applications is Friday, October 27.

This is the fifth year of the award-winning programme, which is backed by Galway Wind Park co-owners SSE Renewables and Greencoat Renewables. The Scholarship Programme awards approximately €50,000 per annum through the provision of 50% grant support towards a student’s annual fees for a maximum of three years.

The Galway Wind Park Scholarship is Ireland’s first-ever wind-powered scholarship. In 2022, 16 scholarships were awarded, and to date, 82 students have received support from the fund as they embark on their college education.

Jacqueline Durnin, Community Investment Manager at SSE Renewables, said: “SSE Renewables is proud to partner with Greencoat Renewables for the fifth year in financially supporting local students to access third-level education. This year we should reach our 100th scholarship and we encourage applications from all eligible students living within 15km of Galway Wind Park to apply to this year’s Galway Wind Park Scholarship Programme.”

Patrick Maguire Investment Manager at Greencoat Renewables said: “We are delighted to launch the fifth year of Galway Wind Park Scholarship Programme. It is fantastic to be able to offer support to local residents and remind them that we are committed to supporting important initiatives such as this and to invest in future generations.”

The Galway Wind Park Scholarship is available to full and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students living within 15km of the 174MW Galway Wind Park in Connemara, County Galway. The bursary programme supports students attending Atlantic Technological University (ATU ) and The University of Galway, as well as other third-level educational institutions across the island of Ireland.

The Scholarship provides third-level education opportunities for local students to gain qualifications and build strong careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths ) subjects and in the areas of energy efficiency, sustainability, environment, health, safety and social skills.

Student selection for the Scholarship is administered by three independent panels from the University of Galway, Atlantic Technological University and FORUM Connemara CLG, a Local Development Company whose main aim is the economic and social development of the Connemara region.

The deadline for completed applications to be submitted to a student’s chosen education institution for the 2023 Scholarship is Friday, October 27 2023.
