Cruise the fjords of Norway

A Norwegian fjords cruise is one of the more popular and picturesque ways to explore the stunning natural beauty of this dramatic coastline.

Norway is renowned for its fjords — long, narrow inlets with steep cliffs or mountainsides carved by glaciers over millions of years. They offer breathtaking scenery, crystal-clear waters, cascading waterfalls, and charming coastal villages. Maura Fahy, managing director had the Norwegian fjords on her ‘bucket list’ and it didn’t disappoint. "I was lucky enough to be able to plan it for this summer just gone, the scenery was stunning, the towns and villages we visited so welcoming of the cruise ships, a real carnival atmosphere, music on arrival, local children out making crepes, a great choice of excursions or plenty to do if you just want to explore your locality and enjoy the hospitality."

Some of the most famous of the fjords include the Geirangerfjord, a protected area with a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing (soon to ban any cruise ships not complying with its vision of sustainability ), Nærøyfjord, Sognefjord, and Hardangerfjord. Each fjord has its own unique beauty, and it is worth researching the route that appeals to you most. Many of the cruises do take in small towns and major cities like Bergen and Copenhagen so you can have a contrast between the solitude of the fjords and the hustle and bustle of city life. You can extend your stay before or after the cruise, take in your city of departure and avail of better flight prices when you travel mid week.

The best time to take a Norwegian fjords cruise is during the summer months, typically from May to September, when the weather is milder, and you can enjoy longer daylight hours. Most cruise lines offer cruises along this route and you can choose to suit your situation; family friendly, five-star adult, small ships, etc. There is a great range of excursions available along the route, hiking, biking, glacier tours, kayaking and visits to historic sites, its best to book these well in advance as the number are limited and can often be booked out by the time you board.

Norway's fjords are home to various marine life, including seals and seabirds. You may also spot reindeer, moose, and other land animals near the fjords. Just like home, the weather can be unpredictable and you will need layers, waterproof clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and binoculars for wildlife and scenery spotting and of course a good camera, the fjords also offer incredible photo opportunities. The season in very limited and Fahy Travel is already taking bookings for next season.
