Conlon remembers ballrooms of romance

Folk singer Ultan Conlon has released his latest album with Grammy Award-winning producer David Garza.

The Starlight Ballroom is the Loughrea native’s fifth album, but first with Garza who he met playing the nightclub circuit in Los Angeles. Garza co-produced the 2020 Grammy-winning album Fetch the Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple.

Referred to as “Ireland’s Willie Nelson” by Folk Radio UK, Conlon’s latest offering celebrates the legacy of Irish show bands and the venues they toured.

His new album refers to Westport, Co Mayo’s famous Starlight Ballroom which operated from the 1960s to 1981. Roy Orbison played The Starlight in 1969 and Ultan’s song ‘The Starlight Ballroom’ ponders the night in question.

The album was released this week on Spotify, and may be ordered on CD and vinyl at ultanconlon.com
