Galway United Women are gearing up for a massive game this Saturday when they host DLR Waves in Eamonn Deacy Park (Kick-Off 7.35pm ).
The game is big for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is the first time the club will have a game broadcast nationally since the men’s team was relegated from the premier division in 2017.
Secondly, in partnership with the Galway Advertiser, the club is offering free tickets to this game to encourage a big turnout - the attendance figures having been the one disappointment in an incredibly impressive season.
Phil Trill’s side further enhanced its reputation with a creditable draw on Saturday in Dalymount Park against Bohs.
The 0-0 scoreline, a second in a row, does not tell the story of the game, however, as United missed a number of chances to close the gap with the side above them in the table.
United had the better of tepid opening exchanges, and looked to have taken the lead when a trademark dangerous corner from Lynsey McKey was powered home by Jamie Erickson. However, it was ruled out for a foul on the home team’s keeper. Four minutes later Jenna Slattery had a great effort from distance, and was then put clean through after a delightful pass from McKey, but Rachael Kelly made a super save to deny Slattery again.
Kelly’s heroics would go on to define the game. Jodie Griffin hit a great drive from distance that was also saved. This was soon followed by a save from Kate Thompson - the Bohs' stopper had made four big saves in the first half hour. And when Slattery scooped an audacious lob pass to set up Griffin, Kelly saved again.
The sense was gathering that this was not to be United’s day, particularly after McKey and Erickson combined again from a corner, but the Canadian’s header somehow flashed wide.
Jessica Berlin was alert to stop a long-range free from Lisa Murphy, but was largely untroubled otherwise. Rola Olusola’s pace posed problems when she was introduced off the bench as the clock wore down, while fellow sub Abbie Callanan could not connect with her cross late on.
Erickson also went close again from a set-piece, but it was not to be. However, there is plenty of positivity to carry into Saturday’s fixture. There have been many big games this season, and a large Terryland crowd could help make this another memorable occasion.
