Mayo Sinn Féin selects second Castlebar candidate

Mayo Sinn Féin has selected its second candidate for next year’s local elections, Tony Geraghty, to run alongside Donna Hyland, who was selected for the party last month.

Mayo Sinn Fein stated: “Tony has campaigned for decent mental health facilities and supports, adequate funding for education, and the delivery of infrastructure that will encourage industry and jobs into the West of Ireland. Living with his young family on the Breaffy Road in Castlebar, Tony is a proud member of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce, and Breaffy GAA club. Tony has been a Sinn Féin activist for many years, who played a key role nationally for the party in the success at the last general election.”

Tony Geraghty said: “As a passionate and committed community activist, I am delighted to be selected to run for election for Mayo County Council. With many years of experience in creating and supporting local jobs in Castlebar, I hope to bring that experience to the political arena.

“With an understanding of the challenges and aspirations of our community, I am determined to be a strong advocate for positive change and effective representation.”

Speaking at the selection convention in the TF, he said: “I am grateful to the members of Castlebar Sinn Féin and Mayo Sinn Féin for their support. I am looking forward to the campaign ahead of us and to ensuring that sufficient Sinn Féin representatives are returned to Mayo County Council so that the concerns of ordinary people are heard.

"It is a priority in Castlebar that more housing is built. This should be public housing, affordable housing and more private housing. There is currently a severe shortage of suitable housing and it is causing unaffordable rents and ridiculously high house prices. We also have a growing homeless emergency in our county town. This in turn is feeding into the cost-of-living crisis, and causing a crisis for local families, local businesses, the public sector and industrial employment.”

Mayo Sinn Fein TD Deputy Rose Conway-Walsh said: “We are delighted to add another strong candidate to the Castlebar local election ticket along with Donna Hyland. Sinn Féin in Castlebar is offering voters an opportunity for real change in next year’s council elections. I know that if they are elected, Tony Geraghty and Donna Hyland will make a significant difference to Mayo County Council and the constituents they serve. I look forward to joining them on the campaign in the months ahead.”
