HSE Community Healthcare West and a host of local organisations have scheduled many events and activities to celebrate International Men’s Health Week 2023. The week begins on Monday, June 12, and runs until Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18.

The key aims of Men’s Health Week are:

· Heighten awareness of preventable health problems for men of all ages.

· Support men and boys to engage in healthier lifestyle choices and activities.

· Encourage the early detection and treatment of health difficulties in men.

Full information on week is available at www.MHFI.org

Men of all ages are encouraged to ask themselves the simple question, what does my picture of health look like? Most of us have unrealistic expectations of being a healthier version of ourselves, we often think it is too much of an ordeal to begin to look after our own health. Now is the time to avail of practical ways to become healthier, setting yourself simple and achievable goals. Practical tips and information will be available at all of the events that are happening across Galway county and city. A calendar of free events is listed below and all men are invited to come along.

A few examples of events that are being organised include:

· 18 men's sheds across Galway are inviting men to come and experience their local shed.

· Free health checks are being organised in Headford and Galway city.

· Soccer and bowling activities across the county.

· Free blood pressure checks.

· Events in local libraries many others.

It has been said that men in the past have been slow to report any health concerns they may have. Laurence Gaughan, project manager, HSE Health & Wellbeing, said: “It is so important for us to recognise the signs and symptoms when things are not going well, either physically or mentally and then to take the courage to talk to your GP, a family member or friend, to connect with others and seek advice. This will help to lighten the load and give you back control.”

Full details of all the free events are available on www.westbewell.ie For any further information, contact the Health and Wellbeing Office in HSE Community Healthcare West, phone Laurence Gaughan on 094 90 42509 or John Haugh 091 775744.
