Volvo says that the new EX90 it revealed towards the end of last year represents a firm stake in the ground for their transformation towards becoming a pure electric car brand by 2030.
It will replace the seven-seat XC90 model when it enters production in late 2023. First deliveries for Ireland should be in early 2024. The new Volvo EX90 competitors will include the Mercedes EQS SUV, BMW iX, Audi Q8 e-tron, Range Rover EV, and yes, the likes of Kia’s all-new EV9.
The EX90 is that it sits on the same pure-electric SPA2 platform as the newly-unveiled Polestar 3.
Volvo’s new flagship will offer seating for seven, with a sizeable 310-litre boot space. This grows to 655-litres with the third row folded away, and a cavernous 1,915-litre load bay is available with just the front seats in place.
All versions will be equipped with a 107kWh battery, but with its preliminary circa 586 kilometre range figure, with the Twin Motor having a slightly longer range than the more powerful version.
A 10 to 80 per cent top up takes half an hour using the 250kW DC charging capability, and bi-directional charging capability will be possible.
Finally, thanks to its twin electric motors and all-wheel drive, the EX90 Excellence offers a smooth driving experience and a range of up to 650 kilometres under the CLTC driving cycle on a single charge.
New Volvo EX90 Excellence unveiled in Shanghai
Volvo posed the question - how is an already special car made even more special? Revealed last month in Shanghai, this limited edition and top-of-the-line variant of the Volvo EX90 takes the premium experience to the next level.
Volvo says that the EX90 Excellence is the perfect companion if you prefer to relax in the rear seats rather than drive yourself. This special version allows you to travel in ultimate, first-class style and comfort.
Externally, the Volvo EX90 Excellence undergoes a few small tweaks compared to its seven-seater sibling, giving it an even more confident and sublime look. Maybe you notice the two-tone colour scheme, or the specially designed 22-inch forged rims, optimised for aerodynamic performance, higher strength and better handling. By and large though, it is based on the beautiful Volvo EX90 that we revealed to the world late last year.
Inside is where the real change happens. They’ve removed the back-row seats and replaced them with two individual seats, equipped with comfortable soft pillows. There are many more luxury features.
Volvo boasts that the Volvo EX90 Excellence won’t be just a new car, it will be a highly advanced computer on wheels. Even better, just like your smartphone or your laptop, the EX90 Excellence is designed to get better over time, thanks to regular over-the-air software updates.
