This month, Pálás Cinema will celebrate a season of erotic thrillers, a genre once considered passé, with late night screenings throughout May.

With movies from the likes of Brian DePalma, The Wachowski Sisters, Ang Lee, Paul Verhoeven, William Friedkin and Park Chan-wook - some of the hottest writers and directors who put a modern, hypersexual spin on classic noir tropes, creating some of the most controversial films of the 80s & 90s.

The series is inspired by Nina Menkes' new documentary Brainwashed: Sex, Camera, Power, in which she explores the ‘male gaze’ through 175 clips from over 100 years of cinema. EXPLICIT has been curated by Pálás Programmer William Fitzgerald, who invites audiences to embark on an exploration of those heady days with steamy summer nights at Pálás.

The series kicks off on Saturday May 6 with Dressed To Kill, the 1980 Brian DePalma classic, which stylishly encapsulates the director's signature strengths. Skipping ahead a few decades, on May 9th, Ang Lee’s beautifully shot espionage thriller Lust will be shown.

On May 18, Queer Cinema Club will present Wachowski Sisters’ classic: Bound. ‘Bunny boiler’ classic Fatal Attraction, one of the more mainstream entries into the genre will screen on May 20.

Paul Verhoeven’s iconic but controversial queer erotic thriller, Basic Instinct, explores the power of a woman’s sexuality – arguably one of the most famous erotic thrillers of all time, it will play on May 27. The series comes to a close on May 30, with a screening of Park Chan-Wook’s visually sumptuous The Handmaiden - one of the most celebrated 'erotic thriller' films of recent times.
