Galway gymnasts featured prominently at the recent All round European Championships in Artistic Gymnastics.
Representing Ireland, the women’s gymnastics team moved up the rankings, finishing 18th in artistic gymnastics and were just 3.6 points short of automatic qualification for the World Championships.
It is the best finishing position by an Irish team in a European Championship, and three of Renmore Gymnastics Club, Kate Molloy, Moycullen, Emma Slevin, Claregalway, and Jane Heffernan, Corcullen, were part of the team in Turkey. The trio were joined by UK-based Halle Hilton in sub division four that included high ranking teams France, Germany, Italy, and eventual winners Great Britain. Ireland’s Coach Chris Murras says this team has much more to give. “I’m so proud of how the girls competed despite some adversity before entering the arena. They had each other’s backs throughout the competition. Building a sense of camaraderie in the team was something I felt helped and was needed. I’m proud of how they improved in the rankings on one of the biggest stages in the world . Can’t wait to see what more they can accomplish in the near future. There is more to come from Irish Gymnastics.”
