Galway United Women fell to their second successive home defeat when losing 1-0 to bohemian FC in Eamonn Deacy Park on saturday.
Despite dominating large parts of the contest, United were unable to get the goal they merited, and now face a tough run of fixtures.
Phil Trill’S team had enjoyed the better of proceedings until the goal came against the run of play. Jenna Slattery was dangerous on the left of the three in midfield, and came close early to locking down the goal of the season, but her audacious bicycle kick was blocked. out wide Gemma Mcguinness came close twice in the first half.
At the back Aoibheann Costello was impressive in her joust with Rowe, with all the visitor’s play going through the talented Mayo woman. they failed to get much change from this, and Therese Kinnevey was equal to her when she drifted out to the left also.
The goal came just before half-time, the result of an unfortunate mix-up at the back on which Rowe pounced.
There were encouraging signs in the second as united pressed well and made a number of positive substitutions. However, they were unable to pull one back, McGuinness again carving out the best of the chances.
On Saturday, United travel to Tolka Park to take on champions Shelbourne. Despite losing a number of players to Shamrock Rovers, Shels have recruited strongly in the off-season. Their credentials were put to the test against Rovers on Saturday in a pulsating game that finished 1-1. Vera Pauw was an interested spectator, underscoring the quality on display.
Irish international Jessie Stapleton, as well as Megan Smyth-Lynch and Kayla Hamric particularly caught the eye on Saturday. dDespite entertaining Wexford already in the campaign, Saturday’s game against Noel King’s side will undoubtedly provide the sternest test thus far for United.
Fans will be mindful also games against Athlone Town and Shamrock Rovers follow this tie. Athlone put eight past a hapless treaty last week, while Rovers are unbeaten and in ominous form.
The League Of Ireland women’s premier division is shaping up to rival even the drama of last season. Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne, Peamount and Wexford all remain unbeaten after three games. All somehow look stronger than last season.
