Institution of new rector of St Nicholas’ to take place next month

Annual garden fete to be held this weekend

The institution of the venerable Gary Hastings, Archdeacon of Tuam, as the new rector of Galway will take place at the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas, Lombard Street on Saturday July 25 at 7pm.

Rev Hastings served here as curate from 1993 to 1995 before becoming rector of Westport, Co Mayo. He is a talented traditional musician and native Gaelic speaker. All are welcome to attend this service.

Meanwhile the annual garden fete in aid of the maintenance fund for St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Lombard Street will take place on Saturday at 2pm at the Rectory, Taylor’s Hill. Parking is available at St Mary’s College, St Mary’s Road.

The continuing upkeep of this medieval church in the heart of the city is costly and the recently installed new lighting system, new glazed entrance doors and interior decoration work are a huge drain on the finances, according to the church.

“The garden fete is a major fundraiser for the church and we are indebted to parishioners, sponsors, the local community in Galway and our visitors for their support in helping to ensure the success of the event.

“This is a great day out for young and old with a bouncing castle and games for the children, Bonny Baby and Fancy Dress competitions, great stalls with cakes, plants, books, bric a brac, wheel of fortune, barbeque and afternoon teas for the adults. A fun day for all the family is in store. Music will be provided during the afternoon by our friends in St Patrick’s Brass Band.”
