Galway musician Tom Portman debuting new album at Crane Bar gig

With four solo albums to his name, Tom Portman has been a consistent, eclectic and prolific force in Irish music.

Portman's new album, entitled Train to Nowhere features maestro Maciej (Magic ) Zaworonek's poetic harmonica lines. Portman's music on Train to Nowhere feature his wry humour but also the subtle depth that one expects from a songwriter of Portman's standing.

Train to Nowhere features cover versions of Portman's songwriting heroes, Hank Williams, Tim O'Brien and Eric Bibb. Portman's musicianship is gaining renown in both Ireland and abroad for his one man shows and performances with a plethora of acts.

He has been touring with Grammy nominated Louisiana slide player Dege Legg, since 2015. Legg's music has been featured in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained.

In addition to performing, Portman has taught instrumental classes for over 10 years in Galway through the GRETB 'Maoin Ceol' School of Music, Athenry Music School.

Speaking on Portman's skill, Carl Corcoran, presenter of Blue of the Night, said, "If it has strings, Portman can play them. Not only play them but bend them, scratch them, shape 'em and mould them into a collage of beauty. This latest is a gorgeous collection of magical soundscapes that take the listener to other places - this is a melting pot of Americana, Irish Trad world and the magical."

Portman will be debuting Train to Nowhere at the Crane Bar on Wednesday, November 2. Doors at 8:30pm and tickets are €10.
