Still your mind at Fernwood

What better place to still the mind and replenish the body than in the heart of Connemara?

Anne and Simon set up eco-conscious retreat Fernwood three years ago as an extension to their family farm just 1km from Clifden. Having bought their ‘forever home’ in 2014, their hospitality backgrounds, passion for Scandi-influenced interior design, interest and expertise in environmental science and urge to do something truly meaningful combined, and the concept of Fernwood was born - “a place of discovery, a place where nature is king and just ‘being’ is what it’s all about,” says Simon.

From the simple, sturdy architecture to the thoughtful, refined interiors - everything about this oasis in the woods feels calm. Avid travellers, Simon and Anne felt it was important to create a unique space that offers a safe haven away from chaos and focuses instead on the serene surroundings. “You won’t find chocolates on your pillows or white robes on the back of doors, but everything you encounter will be considered and very high quality,” Simon says.

The retreat caters for people who are equally conscious of their environment, namely waste - no elaborate or fancy meals are on offer, you can bring your own food and use a fully equipped kitchenette with fridge, oven etc.

Spaces in Fernwood range from their converted garage, Studio, Treehouse Dome and their newly opened Stilthouse. Once you self check-in, explore the glorious 150 acre farm, most of which is designated as a Special Area of Conservation. There is a vegetable garden on site, and Simon and Anne welcome guests to walk around the whole farm. Their donkeys always go down well with guests too!

If you are a swimmer, you will think you’ve died and gone to Salt Lake heaven. Dip into the tidal lagoon (that brings with it some very unique and protected biodiversity ) before strolling a woodland path amongst ancient oaks and an abundant plethora of mushrooms.

Another treat for guests? The sauna.

“We built the lakeside sauna house and plunge pool earlier this year. Located on the shores of the Salt Lake with a 2 metre diameter circular window, guests can watch the swans, herons, otter, seals, mullet and much more in 80 degrees of heat... followed by a lightening-fast dip in the stream fed plunge pool. It is a revelation and is without doubt one of the highlights of our guests’ stays!” said Simon.

Simon and Anne have plans to make Fernwood even more accommodating to those searching for an eco-friendly trip away. “This winter, we plan to install 15kW of solar panels and to get an EV charger on site,” Simon says.

“We are located at the beginning of the Connemara Greenway, which has 6km constructed to date outside our gate. Very soon, it will link up with the Ballynahinch section and from then, will provide a 20km-length path. Within a few years, it will link Clifden to Galway. If it is half as popular as Waterford or Westport, it will be such a great boom for Clifden and the local area,” Simon added. Let’s hope it will.
