The first day of the clubs' cross country event for Galway takes place on Sunday at Bushfield, Loughrea.
The event will see the juvenile even ages from U10 to U18 takes place, along with the senior and masters men’s and women’s races.
A bumper entry of more than 300 juvenile athletes will compete over the purpose-built cross-country course, with events starting from 11.30am and running throughout the day
At adult level, the men’s race looks to be wide open, with Jack Maher, David Bohan, John Moroney of GCH, and Greg Lundon of South Galway expected to compete for the medals. Craughwell AC are favoured to land team and individual titles with a strong squad with key runners Jamie Fallon and William Fitzgerald leading the charge.
The women's event boasts a strong trio of Galway Harriers Club runners, with Jane Ann Meehan, Aine O'Farrell and possibly Ellen Moran taking to the start line.
Grey Lake 10km
Loughrea AC hosted the annual Grey Lake 10km on Sunday with a good field in attendance. First home was Roman Fahy in 37.42, with Dave Evans of Craughwell AC second in 37.58, and Max Parry third in 39.07.
The women's event produced a great battle between GCH duo Clare Rowe and Grainne Ni Uallachain, with Rowe ultimately taking victory in 39.33, followed by her clubmate in 39.54. Third was Craughwell Junior athlete Adara Salvo in 42.35.
Primary Schools Cross Country
The semi-finals of the Galway Primary Schools Cross Country were held in Renmore Galway on Tuesday with record numbers in attendance. More than 2,200 athletes took part in a series of 12 races across three divisions.
Organised by the Galway County Board, almost 100 schools from across the county competed. Highlights of the day included senior wins in the east division for Alan Hallinan and Eimear Fallon, in the west for Cara Giblin and Sean Cleare, and in the central division for Ruby Maguire and Finn Laighneach.
The finals were to take place on Tuesday with the top 30 competitors and top five teams having advanced from the semi-fnals. The top 15 in the finals and top three teams from the Galway finals qualify for the Connacht finals, which will be held in Moyne, Co Longford on October 22.
Galway Bay Races
The Galway Bay series of 10km, half marathon and full marathon, takes place on Saturday October 1 in Salthill. Some 3,000 runners are expected to take part in a carnival of running around the looped course, which starts from the Claddagh out to Gentian Hill and return. The marathon kicks off at 8.30am, with the 10km next at 10.30am, and the half marathon at 12.15pm.
