Murphy hoping for positive response against Treaty

Galway WFC are away to Treaty United on Saturday

The WNL season continues on Saturday with Alan Murphy’s Galway WFC away to Treaty United at the Markets Field (5pm ).

Murphy’s gritty team were unfortunate to lose the televised Eamonn Deacy Park fixture as Wexford Youths’ Aoibheann Clancy converted a last gasp penalty to earn the full complement of spoils.

“It was bitterly disappointing,” Murphy says about the cruel manner of the defeat. “I can put a positive twist on it, being honest it was probably our best performance of the season in terms of keeping the ball and passing the ball - trying to do what we set out to do.”

Despite producing gutsy displays, Galway WFC have been beaten by Peamount United and Wexford recently. “We went 11 without losing, now we have lost the last two,” Murphy adds.

“We have a tight squad at the moment, we cannot look past that, but we hopefully will have a few back next week. The positive is the performances have been good, pretty solid. With the group of players we have, if they perform well, you cannot really ask an awful lot more than that.

“Then, if you lose on the day or you don't get the rub of the green or if a better team beats you or a more experienced team beats you, then you just have to take it. We are where we are at, the group of players have largely done really well, they are visibly learning so much so quick.”

Murphy wants Galway WFC to respond in the next match against Treaty. “Largely if we had drawn the game would it have been a fair result? It probably would have been. I think that we had the better chances in the game and the better opportunities to create a chance to score a goal, but Wexford are decent.”

The fact that so many emerging players are featuring for Galway WFC this season is a source of encouragement for Murphy.

“If you look at the other night, I don't know the maths on it, but it must have been a really young team with the exception of the one or two experienced girls,” he responds.

“We were very young. So we will go to Treaty this weekend, we will prepare properly for the game. Yes we have a few players coming back which is good because we will need them. We will address some of the things we need to address from the weekend.”
