Family roots star in new sculpture exhibition

Copper Roots’, new sculpture by Liam Butler, Davin Butler, Lisa Butler and Ronan Butler opens tomorrow (Friday ) at The Kenny Gallery, Galway.

‘Copper Roots’ marks Liam Butler’s first exhibition in more than 10 years, and his first exhibiting alongside his three children Davin, Lisa and Ronan.

Liam, a self-taught sculptor, has been creating and exhibiting his works for almost 30 years. Generous with his knowledge, he has passed on his craft to the next generation, training each of them in techniques he developed throughout his career. Liam has passed not only his skills, but also his love of copper and exploring the possibilities of this material.

In 2020, the whole Butler family found themselves together in Galway for the first time in many years. During this unplanned period at home, they were all drawn to sculpture with a renewed appreciation, and spent more and more time in the workshop creating alongside one another. This period made for much learning and creativity, as well as experimentation with new techniques.

This exhibition is a celebration of reconnecting with family roots, and of passions passed on from one generation to the next.

Kenny’s were the first gallery to exhibit Liam’s work in 1997, so it holds great significance to return and exhibit many years later as a family.

This Exciting Family Exhibition Is To Be Officially Opened By Yet Another Butler, The Author And Playwright James Butler, brother of Liam, on Friday August 12 at 6pm at the Kenny Gallery, Liosbán, Galway (H91 N5P8 ).

Admission is free, refreshments will be served, and all are warmly welcome – the exhibition continues at Kennys, Monday to Saturday (9am-5pm ) until September 13.
