Injuries and player unavailability ensured Galway WFC were always going to face a demanding challenge in the WNL on Saturday as Peamount United eventually prevailed 2-1 in the capital.
Despite the defeat, Galway WFC manager Alan Murphy was encouraged about the manner in which his understrength team performed. Lynsey McKey edged the visitors' in front, but Peamount recovered to earn the full complement of spoils. "It was probably the right result," Murphy says.
"They had a lot of good chances early on in the game, we held them out. We then scored a great goal from Lynsey. We consolidated things for a while, we won't make excuses, but we were very light on numbers on the day.
"The positive, though, is that some girls stood up when they got chances. It is disappointing because we were 11 games unbeaten. Unfortunately the way things went we were down staff so much that we let that fall in terms of the unbeaten record. It is done now, we need to get back to basics. We have this weekend off in terms of a league game so we might get a few bodies back for the following week."
Galway WFC's next competitive match will be a home fixture against Wexford Youths at Eamonn Deacy Park on August 13. "It has been full on," Murphy says about a busy spell featuring plenty of games since the season restarted. "Trying to get a player or two in was very difficult and proved impossible nearly. It was a tough time. The window is closed now so you have what you have, and you know what you're dealing with.
"We have time to prepare for a live game on the TV against Wexford. Hopefully we can get a few players back, to have a good portion of training sessions to re-evaluate things, to get going again."
