Museum builds currach for raffle

The Galway City Museum has hired the help of expert boat builders Pat Ó Cualáin and Patrick Flaherty to construct a traditional Connemara style currach over a three-day period.

The currach will be made in the courtyard of the museum and launched on Saturday next in the Claddagh basin. The project is part of the museum’s new currach themed exhibition.

To cover the cost of construction the museum will hold a raffle with tickets costing €5 each. The draw for the currach will be made at the end of June and one Galwegian, or visitor to the city, will end up owning a state of the art currach.

The museum itself is hosting a major exhibition on the origin and development of the currach - the Irish skin boat, with samples of currachs from all over the west coast. Admission is free and the museum is open seven days a week.
