An alcoholic who urinated all over the floor of the female toilets in a coach station and tried to headbutt a shop window while being escorted out, was jailed for eight months at Galway District Court last week.
Michael Mallon (33 ) of 112 Renmore Park pleaded guilty to obstruction, trespass, and several public order offences taking place in shopping centres, train and bus stations around Galway city.
Inspector Pat McHugh told the court that on April 21, the defendant had been asked to leave a shop at Eyre Square Shopping Centre but refused and started screaming. He then tried to headbutt the shop window while being escorted out by gardai. The following day Mallon was in the female toilets of Fairgreen Coach Station where he started urinating all over the floor. He became highly abusive to a female member of staff and refused to leave.
On April 16, 2009, gardai received a call from concerned occupants of a house in Renmore Park who had seen a strange man hiding in the bushes.
Defence solicitor Olivia Traynor said that her client, who has 41 previous convictions, admitted being in the female toilets but that he was so intoxicated he thought it was the men’s.
Regarding the trespassing incident Ms Traynor said that Mallon had been living next door and usually hid his key in a flower pot. He had been searching for this key when he saw people and hid in the bushes.
Judge Aeneus McCarthy convicted and sentenced Mallon to a total of eight months in jail and granted legal aid.
