A grant of €118,000 for the Galway Volunteer Centre has been welcomed by Loughrea Green party candidate Patrick Creed.
The allocation is part of a funding package of €2.8 million in 2009 for a network of 21 volunteer centres across the country.
The funding is allocated to centres whose primary role is to match members of the public interested in volunteering with local community organisations seeking volunteers. “Today’s announcement is a real boost for the volunteer centre in Galway and will help them continue the great work they are doing,” he said.
“ It would also be great if a similar type centre was established in Loughrea to help with projects in the local area. Ireland can be proud of its long tradition of volunteering. Particularly in these tougher times, we need to ensure those less well off in society are being looked after,” Mr Creed concluded.
