Worth the weight — city to host top level amateur weightlifting course

Having campaigned for several years Galway will finally host a Level 1 Irish Amateur Weightlifting Assocation Course this weekend.

NUIG's sport medicine specialist James O'Toole of Sports Med West, who has spearheaded the drive to get Galway used as a centre, believes the importance of weight training shouldn't be underestimated.

"It is so important that people bring the expertise obtained at these courses back into their clubs. Ireland as a nation is so far behind other countries, and we have to act.

"Coming into college very few of our students have any weight lifting experience, and that needs to be changed, and now that the Irish Amateur Weightlifting Assocation are coming to the west it is important that people respond."

The course will take place at the NUIG Kingfisher Club on June 6 and 7 from 7pm, and further details can be obtained from James O'Toole at 086 2359148 or by e mailing [email protected]
