Last United game for Murphy before Newcastle switch

Alex Murphy has signed for Newcastle United

Republic of Ireland U19 international Alex Murphy will make his last appearance for Galway United against Cobh Ramblers tomorrow before joining Newcastle United.

The talented Annaghdown teenager has enjoyed a remarkable 13 months since making his United debut against Athlone Town in June 2022.

United boss John Caulfield has praised the contribution made by the former Corrib Celtic youngster. "He is a credit to the family, Brian and Majella, to Galway United coming through our academy," Caulfield says.

"To go to a club that is now probably the wealthiest club in the world - it is a phenomenal story really. It is fairytale story to think he got his debut at 16. Just over 12 months later he is on his way to the premier division."

Caulfield, who has assited Murphy's progression, believes the emerging footballer can make a significant impact in the football world. "It is another great reason why hopefully on Friday night there will be another huge crowd to give him a great send off," he says.

"To see one of our own come through the academy, get into the first team, obviously he came through Corrib Celtic as a child. To get into our first team and to be going over to Newcastle United at 18 years of age. Hopefully we will see him in the premier division. It is great for our supporters to be able to say they were in Terryland watching him over the last 12 months."
