Bike Week for Galway welcomed by cycling group

The Galway Cycling Campaign has welcomed the Galway City Council's key role in coordinating local initiatives for Ireland's first national Bike Week.

Running from June 14 to 21 cycling related events will be run in main urban centres throughout the country.

A number of events will take place across the city including those run by the city council, such as safe cycling advice from the Garda cycling division, a cycle to work day, skills workshop, bike rental initiative, and bike fair. In preparation for the event, the Galway Cycling Campaign (GCC ) is also preparing a variety of promotional and educational activities in the city.

GCC will produce a cycle route map, cycling skills guide, street signs, and a voucher scheme for bike repairs to enable safer cycling during and after the week-long event. The cycling group will also run a family-oriented cycle treasure hunt on Sunday June 21.

Shane Foran, chair of the GCC, said the group was looking forward to taking part in the country's first Bike Week and urged every current and would-be cyclist to participate also. “Given all that has been happening nationally and locally in relation to transport iss ues, there has never been a better time for people to start cycling and to get involved in the promotion of cycling,” said Mr Foran.

The cycling group campaigns on issues of interest and concern to cycling commuters, including traffic management, cycling skills, road safety, cycle facilities, cyclists’ rights and responsibilities, and urban development. “Above all, we believe that the best thing anyone can do to improve conditions for cycling in Galway is to get on their bike and cycle, and to do so safely, considerately, and skilfully. We'd be delighted to talk to any current or potential cyclist if they have any questions or suggestions," Mr Foran added.
