The Final Third

Pre-season set to resume shortly for local clubs

It is that time of the year again when clubs are finalising preparations for the upcoming Galway FA season. The end of August isn't that far away.

In the Galway FA premier division Salthill Devon set the standard with Victor Collins' steering them to a long awaited title.

The chasing pack, though, are already planning and plotting. One interesting development is that Galway United midfielder Mikie Rowe is set to coach West United in pre-season with Emlyn Long taking over as manager from William Grant, who will remain involved with the team.

Valuable service provided by Mervue United

One of the great untold stories in Connacht sport unfolds every Saturday afternoon at Mervue United.

A session for players with vision impairments is expertly organised by the Connolly brothers, Robert and Eric, and Meabh Kelly. There is no shortage of laughter - it is about fun and enjoyment with FAI development officers also providing assistance.

New players of all ages and abilities are invited to attend when the action resumes in September.

Republic of Ireland internationals

During the summer months it is always good to see professional footballers return from elsewhere to spend quality time with friends and family.

Republic of Ireland internationals Ryan Manning and Aaron Connolly have watched some former colleagues play for Galway United in recent weeks.

Niamh Fahey's goal in Georgia

Since emerging as a gifted teenager a couple of decades ago Niamh Fahey has forged an interesting and successful career, accumulating 104 international caps so far.

This is a particularly exciting time for the Republic of Ireland senior international side with Fahey scoring her first goal at that level during Monday's emphatic win over Georgia.
