County women's team takes pole position in league

Galway County women's team was the star of the Galway competitors at the National Track and Field League at Templemore track in Tipperary on Sunday.

Competing in the premier division under manager Sarah Finnegan, the team topped the table with a superb 137 points.

The multi-talented squad saw victories from Veronica Burke in the 1500m walk, Mary Barrett in the discus, Ava McKeon over 400 hurdles, Sinead Gaffney over 800m, Sarah Gilhooley in the steeplechase and the women's 4X400m relay squad, along with a host of other good performances from Kathryn Casserly over 3000 and guests Ellen Moran and Aine O'Farrell.

GCH men’s squad, also n the premier division and secured fifth spot after round one of the league, with a shot put victory for Sean Breathnach and second for him in the weight throw. There were also other second placings for Thomas McStay over 1500m and Richard Kamson in the triple jump.

The Galway County men’s team was an impressive fourth in division one, with a squad drawn from a range of clubs, including Craughwell, South Galway and Castlegar. The squad had wins via Kyle Moorhead over 800 metres, Evan Hallinan in the high jump, David Mannion over 400m, Sean Kelleher in the 3k walk, and a superb team win in the 4X400m relay. Round two will be held on July 31.

Galway 5k series

First over the line in leg four of the EY Galway 5km Series in Caltra was Kyle Moorhead of Craughwell. On a traditionally fast course, Moorhead was followed home by Conor Byrne in second for GCH and Greg Lundon of South Galway AC third.

Jane Ann Healy of Galway City Harriers stormed home to an impressive win in the women's section in a fast 17.50, ahead of GCH's Aine O'Farrell and Julie Bradshaw in second and third respectively.

Fixtures

Galway County Track and Field Championships: The Galway Juvenile Track and Field championships take place this weekend, Saturday and Sunday May 28 and 29 at the Regional Sports Centre in Dangan. The U13 to U19 events take place on Saturday, with a bumper crowd expected on Sunday for the U9 to U12 competitions.

Streets of Galway 8k: The Galway City Harriers organised and Galway Clinic sponsored Streets of Galway 8km is now open for entries on MyRunResults.com The race will take place on Saturday August 6 at 7pm in the city.

Ballina Half Marathon: Barbara Dunne of Galway City Harriers was first woman home in the Ballina Half Marathon on Saturday, crossing the tape in fast time of one hour 24 minutes.
