United suffer disappointing loss

Longford came from behind to win at Bishopsgate

Longford Town 2 Galway United 1

It was a bitterly disappointing evening in the midlands for Galway United as Longford Town claimed the SSE Airtricity League spoils.

Gary Cronin's Longford came from behind at Bishopsgate to defeat United, who suffered a first defeat of the campaign.

A bizarre Michael McDonnell own goal in the 11th minute ensured United took the lead.

Wilson Waweru and Stephen Walsh put Longford goalkeeper Luke Dennison and defender Michael McDonnell under duress culminating in the visitors' taking the lead.

Longford, though, went close in the 42nd minute as a Dean McMenamy free kick forced Conor Kearns to make a decent save.

On the stroke of half-time parity was restored when Ryan Graydon's cross was bundled over the line by Sam Verdon.

Charlie Lyons and Killian Brouder went close for the visitors', but Longford struck the decisive blow in the 77th minute courtesy of a crisp Darren Craven strike.

Late on United substitute Jordan Adeyemo had an effort blocked by McDonnell, but Longford prevailed.
