United secure vital victory

Substitute Manu Dimas and Wilson Waweru scored for John Caulfield's team

Athlone Town 1 Galway United 2

A fascinating SSE Airtricity League first division campaign continues to unfold with Galway United collecting another encouraging win in the midlands.

Athlone Town enjoyed some productive moments in the first half, but United responded to take command after the restart.

Early on Martin Russell's charges tested Conor Kearns, who made fine saves to thwart Thomas Oluwa and Success Edogun.

At the opposite end Jordan Adeyemo had an attempt taken off the line by Noah Van Geenen, but the teams departed deadlocked at the break.

John Caulfield introduced Gary Boylan and Manu Dimas, who both contributed handsomely in the third quarter as United seized the initiative.

Substitute Dimas climbed high in a packed area to connect with Killian Brouder's 58th minute throw-in.

That goal injected United with confidence as Wilson Waweru added a delicious 66th minute effort.

Five minutes from the end Edogun narrowed the gap, but United claimed the spoils.
