EP Review: NOBRO

NOBRO - Live Your Truth Shred Some Gnar EP (Big Scary Monsters)

IT BEGINS with a gospel choir, all harmonies, hand claps, and finger clicks, and an immaculate delivery of the lines, “I spent my whole life running away…”

Just 52 second later, ‘Better Each Day’ erupts into a glorious declaration of just not taking crap from anyone or anything anymore, via furious Slade stomps and Runaways attitude. It has to be one of the songs of the year. It is certainly the most energy boosting.

While the rest of the EP from the Canadian quartet can never quite live up to that song, it would be a mistake to see the remaining six tracks as filler.

‘Julia’ is very close to the standard of ‘Better Each Day’. It describes a relationship gone sour when the titular character left her girl for a man “who gives her everything and more”. Instead of bitterness, there is poignancy over her fate, and celeration of her best qualities.

The Ramones homage, ‘Eat, Slay, Chardonnay’, should bring the house down at festival appearances, while ‘Get With U’ is open about lust, desire, and a purely physical, fun, relationship, but where consent is (rightly ) an absolute must: “I give you permission to touch me there.”

Live Your Truth… is a sugar rush of woman-power attitude wrapped in a mix of riot-grrrl, pop-punk, glam, and tasty vocal harmony hooks. More, please!
