Gritty United earn first league victory at Turners Cross since 1988

John Caulfield's team produced a defiant display

CORK CITY 0 GALWAY UNITED 1

A display dripping with character was sufficient to earn Galway United a first league win at Turners Cross since 1988.

Ed McCarthy's goal divided the teams at the end of a keenly contested encounter with United's determination delighting a passionate away support.

Wilson Waweru's sending off for two yellow cards meant United had to show commendable bravery, but John Caulfield's charges found the answers.

Goalkeeper Conor Kearns made a string of fine saves, while central defenders Diego Portilla and Killian Brouder were defiant throughout.

Captain Conor McCormack led by example in the centre of the park with a tigerish performance alongside David Hurley, who contributed handsomely too.

Performing with grit and a bit of guile, United's first half enterprise was rewarded in the 37th minute.

Alex Murphy raided down the left flank before supplying an inviting cross that was expertly converted by Ed McCarthy.

The City net was dancing and United's industrious start earned a goal.

Within minutes, though, United custodian Conor Kearns had to be alert thwarting Ruairi Keating and Cian Coleman with splendid saves.

United eventually departed at the interval armed with the lead, but an interesting second period was imminent down by the Lee.

When Waweru was dismissed United had to be diligent with Kearns hugely effective denying Cian Bargary and Keating.

United, who last won a league fixture in Cork back in 1993 at Bishopstown, found a way to eke out a victory.

Waterford FC are next on the agenda at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday. Another tough test awaits.
