A food entrepreneur, who was diagnosed as having diabetes 14 years ago, is working towards helping fellow diabetics reduce their sugar levels with an innovative cookbook and a start-up food manufacturing business.
Rob Hallam and his sister Denise have established PURE Treats, an Irish food start-up dedicated to producing food that is low in sugar and educating consumers on food choices, without compromising on flavour or enjoyment.
"It is about doing our best to offer practical solutions to the on-going obesity epidemic," Rob Hallam said.
"It is becoming clear that Ireland's world ranking in food choices and health is anything but complimentary," he added. "We are the fourth highest consumer of sugar in the world, the third highest consumer of ultra-processed food, and the second most obese country in Europe. We need to make the large food producers more accountable for the quality of the food they produce by informing consumers through better food labelling. We also need to encourage a return to home cooking, avoiding the excessive use of ingredients like sugar, which is damaging our health."
As part of their campaign to promote a more healthy diet, Rob and Denise Hallam have produced a cookery book called Sugar Reduction for Tummies which, according to Denise, is "a collection of recipes and tips on how to control sugar cravings without feeling deprived."
