Concerts in Galway and Limerick featuring settings of the Psalms by Monteverdi and Schütz

‘A SONGBOOK of the Spirit’, a concert of settings of the Psalms by two monumental composers of the 17th century, Claudio Monteverdi and Heinrich Schütz, takes place this weekend.

The Resurgam choir, in collaboration with H.I.P.S.T.E.R. Ireland (Historically Informed Performance Series, Teaching, Education, and Research ), will present its first concert of the 2022 season, in St Nicholas' Collegiate Church on Saturday February 27 at 5pm. It is also part of the Abendmusik concert series.

Featuring works from Monteverdi's Selva Morale e Spirituale (1641 ) and Schütz's Symphoniarum Sacrarum Tertia Pars (1650 ), the concert will also include instrumental sonatas by Monteverdi's contemporaries.

.

Speaking ahead of the concert, Resurgam’s new general manager, Vlad Smishkewych, said: “Resurgam joins forces with two new musical partners from Limerick. Our new partner choir Sagittarius Hiberniensis, under the direction of St Mary's Cathedral organist Peter Barley. Limerick's new brasswinds chamber group, the Thomond Ensemble, under the direction of Andrew Jordan, is our newest collaborative partner, and we look forward to further collaborations with this talented group of professionals as they explore early repertoire, historically informed performance, and early brasswinds.”

‘A Songbook of the Spirit’ will also take place in St Mary's Cathedral, Limerick, tomorrow, Friday February 26, at 5pm. Tickets for both shows are available via www.resurgam.ie and bit.ly/resurgam01
