Cllr Mike Cubbard wants the Galway City Council to carry out significant work at Letteragh Road.
At Monday’s meeting of the Galway City Council problems were highlighted by Cllr Cubbard. “The situation at Letteragh Road needs to be looked at as a matter of urgency,” he said. “It is lethal for children. We need a large scale review of Letteragh Road.
“With major housing developments it is going to be a busy road. If you walk it you will see how dangerous it is. I think we need to look at a bigger project to create a safer Letteragh Road.”
'Minuscule'
Uinsinn Finn, senior engineer with the Galway City Council, said: “We did improve the pedestrian facilities. There are pinch points along the Letteragh Road, and it is something we will look at.”
Cllr Cubbard responded: “I accept certain improvements have been made, but they are minuscule. I need some sort of assurances, it is lethal. This was once a rural road. As elected councillors we all bring forward serious concerns.”
'Needs attention'
Brendan McGrath, chief executive of the Galway City Council, replied: “The Letteragh Road is one of a number of similar roads that needs attention. I accept totally it warrants some attention. I completely get where Cllr Cubbard is coming from, I accept the need for works, but it is one of a number of similar projects.”
Cllr Cubbard said: “The entire road needs to be looked at from start to finish. It is a longer term project, it has gone to a stage where it is completely unsafe.”
