Galway is once again gearing up for an international sailing event having been chosen as a stopover for the Round Britain and Ireland Race.
Galway Bay Sailing Club will host the event which sees some 40 boats, many two-handed, taking part in this prestigious event which sets sail from Plymouth on May 29.
Under regulations all boats must stop for 48 hours in each port, which also includes Lerwick on Scotland's Shetland Isles and Blyth in Northumberland.
The gruelling challenge of some 2,000 miles is now in its 56th year, and on this occasion will allow changeovers in crews at each stop.
This week Galway Bay Sailing Club hosted Adrian Gray, Rear Commodore Oceanic and race director of Royal Western Yacht Club, the organisers of the race.
In addition to detailed discussions and planning, both Adrian and Commodore Johnny Shorten and the organising team of Nigel Moss, Fergal Lyons and Olga Scully met Captain Brian Sheridan, harbourmaster of the Port of Galway for in-depth planning of the logistics and organisation of the event.
