Jobs fear at Dunnes Stores

The Galway Advertiser has learned that voluntary redundancies have been sought from Dunnes Stores staff in two city outlets.

It is understood that the redundancies are not nationwide. Staff working at branches in Westside and Eyre Square were informed by managers that they sought redundancies of those who had been with the company for more than three years.

It is unknown how many jobs will be lost. The move follows 60 voluntary redundancies sought in March among management staff.

Following this, trade union Mandate wrote to Dunnes Stores seeking clarification on its redundancy policy. They believed there was no need for redundancies as the company was profitable, and in addition, the package being offered was too little. Rumours currently circulating - and not being denied - suggest the 65-year-old Irish owned company may be taken over by UK supermarket giants Asda.
