Athenry footpath extensions get go ahead

Galway County Council confirm that all legal issues around the proposed works are now resolved

Extensions to the footpath on the Tuam Road in Athenry, at the entrance to the Garraí Glas housing estate, will begin in the coming weeks.

The funding for the works was allocated by Independent councillor, Gabe Cronnelly, and the former county councillor, Peter Feeney, from Galway County Council notice of motion monies. The works were delayed due to legal issues, but the council has confirmed that all the issues are resolved.

The work includes the setting back of the wall, installation of footpaths, removal of trees, and the undergrounding of services.

The works have been welcomed by the Independent Galway East TD, Sean Canney, who said this will join up the existing footpaths and “give greater safety to residents”.

“I acknowledge the work of the Galway County Council,” he said. “This project was achieved with the co-operation of landowners and the vision of Cllr Gabe Cronnelly and former Cllr Peter Feeney.”
