Community multi-use complex to form part of new city development plan

Cllr Mike Cubbard’s proposal envisages a centre for sports, arts, and community groups

A proposal for a community multi-use complex for Galway city, for sports, arts, and community groups and organisations, has been included in the draft Galway City Development Plan 2023 - 2029.

Independent Galway City Central councillor, Mike Cubbard, proposed the inclusion of such a facility at the most recent meeting of the local authority. His proposal received unanimous support from the other elected members.

The former mayor’s proposal calls on the council to “work with all stakeholders” to “explore the development” of a community multi-use complex that would include floodlit grass and astro turf playing facilities; a community training and performance space; multi-purpose meeting rooms; changing facilities; and outdoor training areas with enhanced walkways.

.

“Galway is lacking a central facility to be able to accommodate community groups, clubs, and activities,” he said. “Galway needs a central hub to house all of the various aspects of our communities. Ennis and Ballina have been able to deliver such facilities. Therefore I believe Galway should be no different.”

Cllr Cubbard’s proposal will now form part of the wider draft plan that will eventually go on public display for submissions.
