More than €700,000 for Gort town centre regeneration

Outdoor cultural space, traffic management, and landscaping on the cards for south Galway town

A total of €798,584, for the redesign of Market Square and Cannon Quinn Park in Gort has been allocated under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund.

The?redesign will?Incorporate?public art/sculpture creating a landmark entrance into the town, while a streetscape enhancement scheme will be progressed for?Crowe Street,?Bridge Street,?and?Church Street, incorporating improved accessibility for pedestrians especially those with reduced mobility.

There will also be new street lighting and furniture; improved soft and hard landscaping; urban greening; new traffic management improvements; and investigation of new public parking opportunities.

Canon Quinn Park requires diversification and redesign to improve usages, discourage anti-social behavior, and provide a?green lung?for the town centre.?It is proposed to?redesign the park through?hard and soft landscaping and explore opportunities to create a multiuse outdoor space for summer ?cultural events.

The news has been welcomed by the Independent Galway East TD, Seán Canney, who commended the regeneration team in the Galway County Council for “their vision, enthusiasm, and exceptional ability to target funding to transform towns like Gort”.
