Festive running fare in Galway

Galway city hosts two Goal Miles on Christmas Day, December 25.

The traditional Dangan event at the NUI Galway track takes place from 10am to 12 noon, hosted by GCH, and the second event will start at 11am at Merlin College in Doughiska, hosted by Castlegar AC and Sean McDermott.

Fields of Athenry 10k

The 20th anniversary of the famous Fields of Athenry 10k race takes place St Stephen’s Day, December 26 in the town at 11am.

Hosted by Athenry AC, this year’s event is a sell out, atttracting an entry of some 1500 athletes

Always a highly competitive event, as well as a great day out for the running community over the Christmas period, there is also a children's race on the programme at 10.15am.

This event always attracts a top-class field, with athletes travelling from across the country to take part.

Reigning champions Hugh Armstrong and Breege Connolly may travel, and runners such as David Carter, Neasa De Burca and Sinead Foran, all of GCH, will challenge for podium spots

Goal Mile on Christmas Day

World Race Walking Tour international event

Tuam AC athletes competed at the National Race Walks Championships in Raheny, Dublin at the weekend.

Pride of place undoubtedly goes to All Ireland U14 silver medallist Savanagh O’Callaghan who achieved an outstanding personal best over 3km in 16.19 to win her event outright.

Taillte O’Callaghan won a great battle in the U13 1km, beating Kilkenny’s Amy Walsh by just one second in 5.24, and she was followed home by Rachel Treacy in third place overall and second in the U12 category in 5.30 which is her best time.

Cuisle O’Callaghan took second place in the girls U11 1km in a time 5.38.

Resolution Run

The Resolution Run 2022, a fast and flat 5K road race,takes place New Year’s Day, January 1, 2022, at 10.30am in Galway city centre.

The course is a closed loop and routes through the city centre, from the Claddagh, passing Wolfe Tone Bridge, Merchants Road and the Docks, and routing back out to Grattan Road and the Prom before a fast finish along South Park into the finish at Nimmo’s Pier.

The race is AAI certified and there is a souvenir gift for all entrants.

The race starts promptly at 10.30am at Grattan Road in front of South Park. Race number pick-up is at the Claddagh Hall carpark located right by the start line between 9am and 10am on the morning of the race. Entry is available on Myrunresults.com
