Canney calls for residential developments to be located near train stations

Connectivity with the national rail network will “reduce the reliance on the car”, says TD

Galway County Development Plans and Local Area Plans need to designate catchment areas close to train stations as priority locations for residential developments.

This is the view of Independent Galway West TD, Sean Canney, who said planning and development in Galway needs to start thinking of connectivity with the national rail network, pointing out that Ballinasloe, Woodlawn, Attymon, Athenry, and Gort “could all benefit” from this type of initiative.

“This type of planning will provide for more connectivity, reduce the reliance on the car and realise the full potential for the rail network,” he said. “Train stations will also require park and ride facilities to provide secure parking and encourage people to use the train.”

Dep Canney said that if climate action is to be effective, local authorities need to “ensure people live near public transport to ensure full use of the transport service”.
