Cheevers calls for full report on use of Mervue running track

Councillor questions why use of track is subject to a charge, unlike tracks in Westside and Dangan

A full report on the Mervue running track, examining its use by the public, its opening hours, when it is free and when there is a charge for use, has been requested by a Fianna Fáil councillor.

Galway City East councillor, Alan Cheevers [pictured below], has requested the report from the council’s recreation and amenity department.

“I believe it is totally underused,” he said. “The council is offering so many free hours, but after that there is a charge. This should not be the case as there is no charge for use of the running tracks in Westside or Dangan.”

.

He also alleged that the Mervue track is often closed. “After such a large investment in this facility I believe this is not acceptable,” he said.

Cllr Cheevers has called for the council to undertake a full public consultation with local sports clubs and the Mervue community on its Green Strategy.
