Penny in line to be named top pussy in Ireland

In preparation for World Animal Week, hundreds of proud owners have entered their pets into Pedigree and Whiskas search for Ireland’s best loved dog and cat.

An expert judging panel met to paw through all the entries and narrowed it down to nine finalists. Penny from Connemara won over the hearts of the judges because of her owner’s moving entry. “Penny is my little Persian ray of sunshine. She's the princess of our home, having whatever bed or chair takes her fancy. She has too many toys to mention, even though the old tin-foil ball is the choice toy of the moment, and ample amounts of her Whiskas kitten in her ceramic dishes. She gives me so much pleasure and joy. She came into my life at a difficult and low time. She lifted my spirits with her beauty and energy. I love her unconditionally and will never be able to give her back all that she has given me.”

Participants in the competition were asked to submit a photograph of their furry friends to the World Animal Week website and include a short paragraph describing why their pet should be crowned Ireland’s Best Loved Dog or Cat. Each finalist and full stories from each entry can be found on the website to help voters decide which pet deserves the coveted title.

Penny is a finalist in the Best Loved Cat category and is up against one other cat to win the title. People of Galway can help Penny win this honour by logging onto www.worldanimanimalweek.ie to cast your vote. You can also vote by texting the name of the finalist who you who think is the Best Loved Pet into 53799. Voting closes on September 21. The winners will be announced during World Animal Week which takes place between September 29 and October 5.
