AMONG IRISH musicians, Interference are regarded as one of the best bands this country has ever produced, their admirers including Glen Hansard, Graham Hopkins, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, and Gerry Fish.
Interference are less well known among the public, but many have heard and loved the song ‘Gold’ from the film Once. That song was written by Interference’s main singer and songwriter, the late Fergus O’Farrell.
Interference are now the subject of a documentary, Breaking Out, winner of the George Morrison Feature Documentary Award at the 2021 Irish Film & Television Academy Awards, and Best Irish Documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh 2019.
The film tells the story of Cork born O’Farrell, who, despite being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at a young age, kept singing and pursuing music. His unique talent and love for life inspired a generation of songwriters even as his own was slipping away. Close friend Glen Hansard was one of those songwriters and never forgot that voice, and in one of the many incredible moments in the film, he performs the ultimate duet as Fergus' greatest gift was failing.
